A Decade of Dance and Dedication: Celebrating Hoshi’s Evolution

Kwon Soon-young—known to the world as Hoshi of SEVENTEEN—is more than a performer. He is an artist who dances not just with his body but with his soul. As he celebrated his 29th birthday on June 15, 2025, Hoshi reflected not just on another year, but on an artistic journey that began more than a decade ago. That journey, shared intimately with CARATs (SEVENTEEN’s fandom), has been built on precision, creativity, and above all, heart.

In a Weverse Live on his birthday, Hoshi said, “CARAT are the reason I want to give a performance I can be proud of.” That line defines not only his approach to performance but also his unwavering bond with fans.

Leading with Every Step: Hoshi’s Impact in SEVENTEEN

As SEVENTEEN’s performance leader, main dancer, and lead vocalist, Hoshi is the architect behind many of the group’s most iconic stages. He co-choreographed nearly all their routines—from the emotionally raw Don’t Wanna Cry to the dynamic CLAP and the powerful Ready to Love. He once studied contemporary dance just to perfect the mood of a single performance—evidence of his obsession with artistic integrity. His Taekwondo background (4th-degree black belt) injects his movement with martial precision and flair. Who could forget the viral moment during HIT when his footwork broke the stage floor? That wasn’t a gimmick—that was Hoshi being Hoshi.

SEVENTEEN’s group accolades are equally monumental. In 2024, they won both "Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" Daesangs at the MAMA Awards, with their album Spill the Feels shattering first-day sales records. And through it all, Hoshi has stayed at the creative helm of their performance identity.

Solo Chapters: From “Spider” to “I Want You Back”

Hoshi’s solo debut mixtape Spider in 2021 marked his emergence as an independent visionary. A moody, intricate piece of work, it showcased his musical and choreographic instincts on a new scale. He directed everything—from concept to movement—resulting in a haunting yet captivating solo performance.

In 2025, he gave fans a surprise birthday gift: the self-composed track I Want You Back, accompanied by a stunning new music video. The release reinforced his identity as a soloist capable of tugging on heartstrings as much as turning heads with sharp choreography.

Dynamic Duo: Hoshi X Woozi

March 2025 saw the debut of SEVENTEEN’s third official subunit—Hoshi X Woozi, affectionately nicknamed 96ers. Their single album BEAM, led by the track 96ers, was a commercial triumph—selling nearly 500,000 units in Korea and over 46,000 in Japan.

Their chemistry, both as friends and creative collaborators, is undeniable. Hoshi said of Woozi, “I feel so blessed to have a hit songwriter beside me and that he knows me so well. I rely on him a lot, both musically and personally.” Their joint tour through South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, as well as their inclusion in KCON LA 2025, underscores their international appeal.

More Than a Performer: The Philosophy of Hoshi

What makes Hoshi stand out is not just his skill—but his mindset.

I follow the beating of my heart,” he said, when asked about how he approaches creativity.

This intuitive, emotional compass guides everything from songwriting to fan interactions. He doesn’t create for spectacle alone—he creates to connect.

Even his humorous and human side makes him beloved. Whether it’s trending online for wandering off backstage looking for water or falling asleep hugging a toilet after thanking every staff member at a company gathering, Hoshi’s stories are the kind fans treasure most.

The Horanghae Legacy: Fan Love and Identity

Hoshi's tiger persona—horangi in Korean—has become legendary. His invented term horanghae (a mix of “tiger” and “I love you”) is now a staple in CARAT vocabulary. He even released a song titled Tiger featuring Tiger JK on International Tiger Day, a move that cemented his dedication to the “tiger agenda.”

Fans, affectionately called CARATs, celebrate his authenticity. From comments like “How can someone be so sweet?” during his fan interactions, to global support at fan meetings like Carat Land 2025, where over 58,000 fans gathered and many more tuned in online, Hoshi’s influence is both wide and deeply personal.

Walking Beside Hoshi: A Fan's Journey

Being a fan of Hoshi isn’t just about stanning a dancer or singer—it’s about witnessing the growth of a passionate soul who dares to dream big, work hard, and stay grounded.

He once said:

It’s everyone’s first time living this life, how can you be good right from the start?

It’s this blend of humility, ambition, and heart that makes his journey not just inspiring, but relatable.

Whether he’s leading SEVENTEEN’s intricate formations, writing personal lyrics, or holding a fan’s hand during a concert, Hoshi shows us that performance is about more than entertainment—it’s about emotion, connection, and care.

The Beat Goes On

Hoshi's 29th year marks a decade of brilliance: a dancer who became a leader, a performer who became a creator, and an idol who became an inspiration. For CARATs, watching Hoshi evolve has been like witnessing art in motion—ever-changing, ever-passionate, and always true to heart.

As we look to the future, one thing is clear: Hoshi isn’t done dancing. And neither are we, dancing alongside him with every beat.
